The Snook bite has been and will continue to gain momentum over the next few months. Launching the boat out of Cassen Park in Ormond Beach offers the choice to head to Daytona Beaches urban environment or Ormond Beaches natural environment. In Daytona we target Snook around the bridges and residential docks and sea walls.
In Ormonds Tomoka River and Basin we target them around natural structure like fallen trees and overhanging Brazilian Peppercorn. Drop offs, eddies, points, and creek mouths are also prime Snook locations.
Snook tend to hold tight to structure so you will need a very well placed cast to lure them out. I also recommend 20# test main line and 30-40# flouro or mono leader. Crank baits and twitch baits like the lipped bombers, rapalas, or mirrolure mirrodines are excellent choices. Soft plastics like the DOA CAL shad tail or the DOA Shrimp are another great option. Snook will also blast a topwater in low light conditions. My favorite is a free lined select size live shrimp followed closely by a small pinfish, or mullet. I’ll sit down and right a more detailed, how to catch Snook in the Daytona/Ormond area in the near future. This should at least help get you started.
